The Sabal is my preferred wood choice- diameter and hard wood, slow to rot. These tikis are over 7 foot tall, and I've used a blow torch for "aging" them.

Re: Is palm a good wood to Carve? I have carved a few Tiki's from palm trees in Florida. Only the outer layer is really "carveable". I seal the ends with an oil based sealer very well. They really soak it up. Fugus loves palm wood so make sure that what you are using has an antifungal in it. If not add it (home depot sells).
